classicalmusic:qualityandequality Itisamomentthatmaynotbeascelebrated,orasheadline-grabbing,asFrancesMcDormand’sOscarspeechurgingHollywoodA-listerstoconsider“inclusionriders”–contractualclausesinsistingthatcertainproportionsofblackandminorityethnic,disabled,womenandLGBTworkersbeemployedontheirfilmprojects.Butinitsown,muchlessglitzyandhigh-profileway,Britain’sclassicalmusicworldismakingstridestowardsunravellingasituationthathasseenacenturies-longdominanceofitsranksofmusicians,conductorsandcomposersbyoneparticulargroup:whitemen. In2015Chineke!,Europe’sfirstmajorityblackandminorityethnicorchestra,madeitsdebut.FoundedbyBritishdoublebassistChi-chiNwanoku,itjoyfullycelebratesBMEclassicalvirtuosityandstandsasachallengefortheindustrytodobetterintermsofnurturing,recognisingandhiringdiversetalent.In2017,SoundandMusic,thenationalcharityfornewmusic,promisedthatitwouldworkwithequalnumbersofmaleandfemalecomposersby2020.Lastweek,theProms,Cheltenhammusicfestival,AldeburghfestivalandHuddersfieldcontemporarymusicfestivalannouncedtheywouldachievea50-50genderbalanceacrosscomposerscommissioned,andperformersandspeakersbooked,by2022–justsomeofthe45EuropeanmusicfestivalsandconferencessigninguptoaninitiativebegunbyBritain’sPerformingRightSocietyFoundation.Thisweekanimportantconservatoire,TrinityLabaninLondon,announceditsVenusBlazingproject.Musicbywomen,fromalleras,willmakeupmorethan50%ofconcertprogrammesinits2018/19academicyear,anditispledgingtogrowitslibrarytoincludemorescoresbyhistoricallyoverlookedwomencomposers.Thiskindofmoveisespeciallyimportant.Thecanoniscurrentlyoverwhelminglymale–but,asscholarlyworkhasmadeabundantlyclearoverthepastseveraldecades,therearelegionsofwomencomposerswhoseworkisrarelyperformed:thisneedstochange. Tomany,thisinsistenceonfairnesswillseemutterlylogical.However,suchmoveshavemetwithoppositionfromsomeintheindustry.Theyseeattendingtodiversityasimperillingacultureofexcellenceinwhichtheonlycriterionforinclusionoughttobequality.Othersarguethat,whileBritishwomencomposershaveonlyrecentlygainedafootholdinmainstreamcomposingcareers,thereis,now,alevelplayingfield.Byimposingtargetsonequality,goestheargument,theseyoungerwomenwillbeadvantagedattheexpenseofoldermen. Theseargumentsholdlittlewater.Attendingtodiversitydoesnotquashqualitybutincreasesit,wideningthepooloftalentratherthanreducingittoasmall,historicallyprivilegedgroup.And,byboldlylookingoutwardsattheworldaroundit–inallitsrichness–Britishclassicalmusicstandsagreaterchanceofflourishingandgrowingasitshould,ratherthanwitheringassomanyfear.Naturally,itwouldbepreferableifequalitycouldbeachievedwithouttargetsimposedandcommitmentssignedupto–butThursday’sInternationalWomen’sDaywillbeafittingmomenttorecallthatshiftingtraditionalinequalitiesisastruggle,andtakesmorethanavaguesenseofoptimism.Thepowerofunconsciousbias–theunreflectingprocessbywhichracismandsexismareperpetuatedevenbydecentandfair-mindedpeople–demandstobecombatedwithsomethingstrongerthangoodintentions.Ahealthyculturalworldisoneinwhichallkindsofvoicesareheardandenjoyed.AhealthyculturalworldisonethathonoursthemoralTopics
